Once a Wrestler always a wrestler
You may worry that wrestling may be a violent sport or that your child will become discouraged if he/she loses a match. Believe it or not wrestling much like martial arts teaches children discipline and control over their emotions. Although your child is on a wrestling team each match is individual win or loss. This means your child has to use the skills he/she is learning and stay focused during the matches. It is a close contact sport however is a sport that teaches children that although they may loose some matches what's important is what they learned from the match and the effort they put into it. Like in life, you may stumble or fall, but you learn the lesson and keep moving forward.
Not only does wrestling teach children self control and perseverance it teaches them self defense skills and confidence who in they are. If you've ever met anyone whose wrestled you'll see that they all have that "never give up" attitude and a self confidence that is unparalleled.

The honest truth is your child will cry after losing a match, maybe once or maybe even a bunch of times. This is because they just worked their little butts off, exhausted themselves and nobody likes to lose. However, that's where the you parent and the coaches come in. With the right attitude, they can help your child to realize that it isn't the outcome of the match that is important, but the journey it takes to get there.
So the question isn't really "why choose wrestling" the real question is "why wouldn't you choose wrestling"? |
Lets get some answers
How Old does my child have to be ?The youngest wrestler I've seen is 3 years old. However, this is up to the club that you join. Our club has wrestlers ages 5-18, we do take some 4 year olds depending on their birthdate. This is because we are a non-profit club that has a limited amount of volunteer coaches and usually about 45-60 kids who participate each season. The really young kids 3-4 yrs old don't quite have the focus to make it through practice. The little ones are adorable and hilarious.
Little guy Wrestling (my son Logan 5 years old 1st year wrestler is the one in the Black singlet with blonde hair).

DO girls wrestle boys ?The answer to that is YES ! Girls do wrestle boys. Although most people think of wrestling as a boys sport, more and more girls sign up every year. Once a girl turns about 12 or she is at the schoolgirl/schoolboy age bracket they can choose to wrestle only girls this only applies at tournaments. This is great but at the same time, there's usually not enough girls for a weight bracket so we encourage our older girls to continue to wrestle boys at tournaments so they get mat time and experience.
My daughter Elizabeth wrestling a boy (she wins) :) They are both 2nd year wrestlers and 11 years old.
